Investigating…What I've found so far
Likely root cause
- A transient spike in message production is the primary trigger, with the producer rate up to 31 messages at 23:09 UTC, inside the alert's 5-minute window.
- Network latency may have contributed, with a spike to 975.63 ms shortly before the alert window.
What happened
- The alert triggered at 23:13:58 UTC with kafka.waterdrop.queue.size.p95 at 8.0 messages, above the monitor threshold of 5.0.
- Investigation of kafka.waterdrop.produced_async found a production spike to 31 messages at 23:09 UTC, against an average of about 7.
- kafka.waterdrop.network.latency.p99 spiked to 975.63 ms at 23:05 UTC, then settled under 50 ms by the time of the alert.
- No producer errors kafka.waterdrop.error_occurred were recorded during the window.
Recommendations
- Review the threshold on kafka.waterdrop.queue.size.p95, which looks sensitive next to the documented warning level of 250 messages.
- Keep watching kafka.waterdrop.network.latency.p99 for spikes between the rootly-workers cluster and the Kafka brokers.
